Based on real experience, this checklist helps you find a luxury wheelchair accessible studio apartment with features that support safety, ease, and independence. Use it while touring or reviewing listings.
- Grab bars are securely installed near the toilet and in the shower.
- Shower is roll-in style with no curb or threshold.
- Handheld shower wand is available and within reach.
- Fold-down shower bench is installed or can be added.
- Flooring is smooth and non-slip with no raised transitions.
- Entryways and interior doorways are at least 36 inches wide.
- Kitchen has roll-under sink and stove (or adjustable height options).
- Light switches, cabinets, and thermostat are reachable from a seated position. - Layout allows for full 360° turns in the bathroom, kitchen, and living area.
- No unnecessary rugs or floor obstructions that interfere with wheels.
- Washer/dryer (if included) is front-loading and reachable.
- Parking space or drop-off area is close to a ground-level or ramped entrance. - Elevator access is available if not on the ground floor.
- Ask for updated photos of bathroom, kitchen, and entryway before touring. - Bring a tape measure and measure clearances during the visit.
- Confirm grab bars are bolted into wall studs (not just adhesive).
